Top Tips for Writing a Cover Letter

Having a great CV is one thing, but adding a strong cover letter with your application can really make you stand out from the crowd. Read on to ensure you get to the top of the pile…

Tailor it to the Position

Write individual cover letters for every job you apply for. Even if the structure is the same, you need to tailor it to each role - and employers will be checking! Try to demonstrate that you’re aware of the company’s goals (if you know them) and how you can help achieve them. This will make your cover letter far more effective and make you seem an enthusiastic candidate for the role.

Structure

There are no set rules on how your cover letter should be structured, but making sure that it flows well is crucial to impress recruiters. Here is a basic structure of a cover letter:

Opening: Have an opening line that’ll grab the reader’s attention and make your cover stand out. Try to use the hiring managers name rather than “To whom it may concern”. There are many great examples online on how to create a punchy opening.

2nd Paragraph: Match your experience and qualifications to the role. Expand on your CV and back up the points that you made.

3rd Paragraph: Show your knowledge of the company and what you can do for them.

Closing statement

Remember, if you are using a recruitment agency to apply for a job. You won’t know who the company is.

Expand on your CV

Demonstrate why you are the best fit for the role and give relevant examples. Don’t re-write your CV; add additional information such as your relevant experience, skills and achievements that proves why you’re perfect for the position. Be clear about how you’re right for the company and highlight your qualifications by matching your experience to the role; a great way to do this is to use keywords in the job description.

Research

Talk about the company if you can. Research the company and include information about them; however, you won’t know this information if you are applying through a recruitment agency. Doing your research will help you tailor your cover letter to the company but will also demonstrate that you’re passionate about the role and the business.

Include your Personality

Employers don’t want to hire just a list of qualifications; they want to hire a person that’ll fit within the team. Ensure the letter shows how you’re motivated and enthusiastic to give them a glimpse into what type of employee you are. However, still try to keep the letter concise and exciting.

Just remember: Behind every CV is a good cover letter.
